Four injured in communal violence in Gujarat

December 28, 2002 15:41 IST

At least four people were injured in two incidents of violence between two communities on Friday night at Halol and Pavagadh towns of Panchmahals district, the police said.

The situation is now under control, a top police official said on Saturday.

Villagers from Shivrajpur, Pavagadh and Kalol who were going to Halol town to attend a function to pay homage to the Godhra carnage victims, raised anti-minority slogans while passing through a sensitive area in Halol.

This incited tension.

Later, the police intervened and the situation was brought under control after which the group went towards Pavagadh, 7 km from Halol, and confronted another rival group.

Security has been beefed up and additional forces rushed to the affected place, the police said, adding that timely intervention prevented flaring up of the situation.

"One company of the State Reserve Police and additional police personnel have been deployed in all the sensitive areas," District Superintendent of Police Narsimha Komar said.
