90% rape cases involve relatives: Delhi police

December 26, 2002 16:51 IST

Ninety per cent of rape cases involve relatives of the victims while almost 100 per cent of those involved in eve-teasing are well-educated married men.

Delhi Police Commissioner R S Gupta provided these startling figures at a press conference on Thursday.

While making a separate presentation on Crime Against Women, the commissioner said a case study revealed that persons unknown to the victims commit only 10 per cent of rapes.

Gupta said during a special drive in the North Campus of the Delhi University, it was found that none of the students were involved in eve-teasing.

"We found an unusual trend during the case study. In the 381 cases of eve-teasing registered since August 15 this year, those involved were found well-educated, well-employed and married persons," Gupta said.

He said the Delhi police in collaboration with a non-governmental organisation is conducting a case study of rape cases in which the accused have been acquitted from the court.

"This will enhance our skills in preparation of cases without any loopholes in future," he added.
