Arrest Modi for planning Gaurav Yatra: Laloo

Anand Mohan Sahay in Patna

The Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Laloo Prasad Yadav on Thursday demanded the arrest of the Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi under the Prevention of Terrorism Act for planning the Gujarat Gaurav Yatra.

Yadav said Modi's proposed yatra would 'terrorise' the minority community in the riot-ravaged state.

He said the Centre should step in and ask Modi to back off.

Terming the yatra Danga Rath Yatra (arson rally), the RJD chief demanded imposition of the President's rule in Gujarat.

He accused the BJP of playing the 'Hindu card' to woo the voters after 'failing on all fronts'.

He said his party would launch a countrywide agitation against the yatra in the first week of September.

Yadav also supported the Election Commission's decision not to hold early election in Gujarat. "EC is right and its decision rational in view of ground reality in the state," he said.

He said BJP leaders like Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani were 'silent' when the then Chief Election Commissioner T N Seshan had postponed the Bihar assembly election thrice in 1995. "If the EC's decision was right then, why is the BJP against the EC decision now?" he asked.
