CBI should probe Shivani murder case: PIL

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

A Public Interest Litigation filed in the Delhi high court on Saturday demanded the probe into the murder of journalist Shivani Bhatnagar be taken over by the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Manish Mishra, son-in-law of former Bihar chief minister Jagannath Mishra, filed the PIL.

The petitioner alleged the Delhi police had 'failed' to investigate the case 'properly' and identify all the accused in the high-profile case.

The petition also refers to the charges made by Madhu Sharma, wife of the IPS officer Ravi Kant Sharma, who has been named as the key accused in the case by the Delhi police.

"Since Mrs Sharma has made serious allegations against Pramod Mahajan [Union Communications Minister], it becomes all the more important that the case be investigated by an independent agency like the CBI," the petition said.

The petition is likely to be taken up for hearing by a division bench of the Delhi high court on Monday.

During the hearing the Delhi police may question the authenticity of the affidavit filed by R K Sharma in the court for his bail application.

Sharma had reportedly visited the Tis Hazari courts on August 16 and signed his affidavit before the oath commissioner. The Delhi police denies it.

The police have been looking for R K Sharma since August 1 and have conducted a number of raids at various places in Haryana, Delhi and other states in their bid to arrest him, but so far he has evaded their dragnet.
