EC team arrives in Ahmedabad

A three-member team of the Election Commission, led by Chief Election Commissioner J M Lyngdoh, arrived in Ahmedabad on Thursday night for a first-hand assessment of the situation in the state.

The EC is already in possession of a report by a nine-member team which toured the state last week.

While the Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party wants elections in the state to be held in September, the opposition wants the EC to wait till the state, which went through an orgy of communal violence just some months back, returns to complete normalcy.

The EC team is likely to hold a series of meetings with senior government officials, representatives of political parties and non-government organisations involved in the rehabilitation of riot victims.
