Women's commission indicts Gujarat govt

Expressing displeasure over the steps taken by the state government to handle the violence, NCW chairperson Purnima Advani said even a month after the violence broke out, police had not registered FIRs in cases of atrocities against women.

"The number of FIRs registered was much less than the incidents of violence against women reported to the NCW," she said on Wednesday.

"The commission is struck by the state of fear and insecurity as evident from those affected, particularly women," she added.

"Women have complained of extreme violence including some cases of sexual assault. Many have lost their family members, their homes, their livelihood and their dignity."

"Confidence of the affected women in the police authorities has been eroded," Advani told reporters in Delhi while releasing a report on Gujarat prepared by a NCM committee, which visited the riots-hit cities and relief camps.

However, refusing to fix responsibility for the failure to prevent the riots, she said the commission was more concerned about rehabilitation and relief work vis-a-vis women.
