Govt to keep mum on Hurriyat-PoK leaders' meeting

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

The Centre has decided not to react to the meeting between senior All Party Hurriyat Conference leaders Abdul Gani Lone and Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and former prime minister of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir Sardar Abdul Qayoom Khan in Sharjah last week.

At present, Qayoom Khan is the chairperson of the committee on Kashmir set up by Pakistan President Gen Pervez Musharraf.

"Why give them unnecessary importance by talking about the meeting?" Union Minister of State for Home Affairs I D Swami told rediff.com.

However, sources in the Union home ministry had a different explanation for the government's line of action.

The contents of the discussion between the Hurriyat leaders and Qayoom Khan is expected to be favourable to the government, they said.

"The two sides have agreed to end the jihad (holy war) in Kashmir, which is what the government wants," the sources pointed out.

Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Dr Farooq Abdullah has so far refused to comment on the meeting.

After the meeting, Lone proceeded to the United States of America via London for medical treatment while Mirwaiz is expected back in India on Monday.
