Five people, four of them women, died in three Orissa villages due to fluorosis, state health director Harekrushna Dash said on Saturday.
The women, identified as Sakuntala Dalai (49), Dohita Parida (38), Patar Dalai (45), Sakuntala Bhuyan (78), died at Balasingh, Singhpur and Balasinghapatna villages in Khurda district about 60 km from the state capital, Bhubaneswar.
Dash identified the man as Bhima Mohapatra (78).
Speaking to rediff.com Dash said that all five died within the span of last week.
The water sources in these three villages were declared unhygienic due to excess fluorine content, but the people still consumed the contaminated water leading to fluorosis, he said.
About fifty people are undergoing treatment at the district hospital at Khurda, he said.
We have sent the additional district magistrate of the district to visit the affected villages and submit a report by Saturday afternoon, Dash said.
