Aftab Ansari's judicial custody extended to April 19

A Kolkata court on Friday extended the judicial custody of Aftab Ansari, prime accused in the terrorist attack on the United States Information Service office, to April 19.

The extension in judicial remand of Ansari alias Farhan Malik was ordered by Chief Metropolitan Magistrate R N Sinha on a prayer by Special Public Prosecutor Ashok Bakshi in connection with the January 22 terrorist attack.

Ansari, also the prime suspect in the kidnapping case of industrialist Partha Pratim Roy Burman, has been charged under various sections of the IPC, including sedition, criminal conspiracy, murder and Arms Act.

The chief metropolitan magistrate had on March 22 remanded Ansari to police custody till Friday in the case.

Ansari was brought to the court premises amid tight security in a black Tata Sumo. Gun-toting commandos and policemen threw a cordon around him as soon as the Sumo drove into the court premises.

Ansari was arrested by Dubai police and handed over to CBI authorities in February. He was brought to the metropolis on March 10.
