SC refuses to relax CNG norm for Delhi's bus fleet

With hardly a fortnight to go for the September 30 deadline, the Supreme Court on Monday refused to relax the CNG-only norm for the 10,000 strong Delhi bus fleet but clarified that it had never insisted on CNG for taxis and auto-rickshaws.

A three-judge Bench comprising Chief Justice A S Anand, Justice B N Kirpal and Justice V N Khare refused to allow any variation in its July 28, 1998 order asking conversion of the entire city bus fleet into single fuel CNG mode.

However, it said "There is no order which compels taxi or autos for conversion into CNG or prohibits plying of four-stroke autos running on low benzene petrol."

Referring to the recent report of the court-appointed Environment Committee headed by Bhure Lal, the bench said the committee has given recommendations on the safety standards to be observed in CNG vehicles.

The court asked the counsel for parties to go through the recommendations to give their suggestions within one week and posted the matter for further hearing on September 28, two days before the deadline.

On the CNG for buses, the bench said, "Our order dated July 28, 1998, regarding conversion of entire city bus fleet into CNG-only stands and requires no modification."
