Home Minister Lal Kishinchand Advani Friday "disapproved" of the action of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad in storming the Ayodhya temple on Wednesday in defiance of a Supreme Court order.
"I have called for information about the incident. Prima facie, I wish to disapprove of what the VHP (Vishwa Hindu Parishad) has done there," he told members of the Foreign Correspondents' Club here.
"There may be a security lapse there," he said echoing Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's remarks. Vajpayee had earlier asked how the VHP activists were allowed to worship at the makeshift temple in Ayodhya despite the posting of police personnel to prevent such incidents.
Advani, an accused in the December 1992 demolition of the 16th century Babri mosque by Hindu fanatics, said, "I felt necessary also to express my disapproval of the action."
But he said he did not know if the action by the VHP, which had been criticised by the opposition and Muslim groups, amounted to a violation of law. "It is a state matter. I will certainly inquire into it," he said.
He denied newspaper reports that hundreds of young supporters of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had indulged in vandalism at the Taj Mahal in Agra during a BJP meet Sunday and said the reports were exaggerated.
