A defiant Bharatiya Janata Party-led Progressive Democratic Alliance in Manipur Friday said it will stake claim to form a new government after May 28 and rejected suggestions about the imposition of President's Rule in the state saying there is no ground for such a step.
"We are ready to stake claim but we will wait till May 28," the day when state level leaders are scheduled to have a meeting with central leaders of the Samata Party and the BJP in New Delhi, PDA spokesman Gangmumei Kamei told reporters at the residence of Janata Dal (United) president and Union minister Sharad Yadav.
Opposing outright the Samata's claim for reinstatement of its government, or imposition of President's Rule, he asserted that PDA enjoyed "an absolute and comfortable majority" to form a new government.
"So, Manipur should not be browbeaten by the Centre and the Samata Party should not insist on something not possible," he warned.
The PDA led by R K Dorendra Singh has 40 MLAs, including 26 from BJP, in the 60-member house.
Kamei said that to drive home the point that the "ground realities" should not be overlooked, a delegation of PDA MLAs drawn from its constituents met senior BJP leaders Pyarelal Khandelwal, Madan Lal Khurana, Narendra Modi and Union ministers Arun Jaitley and Bijoya Chakrabarty.
BJP president Jana Krishnamurthy, however, refused to meet them ahead of the May 28 meeting.
Dorendra Singh, who arrived in Delhi on Friday morning, however, remained conspicuous by his absence at these meetings.
