Top TN police officials shifted,
DMK leader arrested

The new All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government on Thursday shifted the Madras police commissioner and two top officials involved in anti-Veerappan operations, even as former deputy speaker and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader Elamvazhuthi was arrested for attacking an AIADMK polling agent on May 10.

Police Commissioner P Kalimuthu, replaced by Muthukaruppan, an IGP-level officer, will take charge as additional director general of police (social justice).

Additional Director General of Police A X Alexander, who headed the special task force set up to nab forest brigand Veerappan, has been moved to the newly-created post of project director, Tamil Nadu Police Academy.

Additional Director General of Police M Balachandran, who also was part of the STF, has been transferred too, but his new posting has not yet been specified.

Meanwhile, Elamvazhuthi, who has been re-elected from Egmore constituency in Madras, has been charged under sections relating to rioting, attempt to murder and criminal intimidation.

He was taken to Vellore prison, about 150 km from Madras, after a city magistrate remanded him to 15 days' judicial custody.

Elamvazhuthi, speaking to reporters after his arrest, accused the new government of vindictiveness.

DMK chief and former chief minister M Karunanidhi too criticised the arrest saying that under the AIADMK regime "such incidents of innocents becoming accused and accused going scot-free would become a continuing story.
