Balakrishna Pillai wins

Sitting MLA, R Balakrishna Pillai (Kerala Congress-B), retained the Kottarakkara constituency defeating V Raveendran Nair (Communist Party of India-Marxist) by over 12,000 votes.

Pillai had been convicted for five years in a case pertaining to irregularities in construction of a tunnel of Idamalayar project when he was power minister in the 1980s.

Pillai, also convicted for one year in the graphite corruption case, pertaining to illegal sale of electricity to a Karnataka firm, was in jail for a week in March after the Kerala High Court upheld the conviction by a special vigilance court.

Appeals against both the convictions are pending before the Supreme Court.
