Punjab terrorist arrested after a decade

After a decade-long hunt, the Punjab police arrested a terrorist belonging to the Khalistan Commando Force (Zaffarwal group), who was declared an offender by a court in Gurdaspur district, a senior police officer said on Friday.

Sarwan Singh, a resident of Aulakh village, who along with one Balwinder Singh was wanted in connection with a number of crimes, was arrested near Batala, Gurdaspur district police chief Varinder Kumar said.

On interrogation, Sarwan Singh confessed that he and other militants had killed Puran Singh and his mother Sawinder Kaur at Vadhai village in 1990, Varinder Kumar said.

Mohan Singh, father of Puran Singh, was an anti-terrorist activist and had been provided a security guard at his residence.

Sarwan and his accomplices, in connivance with the security guard, killed Puran Singh and his mother and took away Mohan Singh's service SLR, one .303 rifle and 432 cartridges, Kumar said.

Due to increased police pressure, Sarwan Singh left the country for Germany where he lived with his brother Manmohan Singh. He returned from Germany recently.

He was declared an offender in 1996.
