Sudarshan clarifies remarks on PMO

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief K S Sudarshan Sunday night clarified he had not made any remarks against the functioning of the Prime Minister's Office.

He said a reporter had asked him that "in Indira Gandhi's regime, (her son) Sanjay Gandhi had emerged as an extra-constitutional authority and sought my comments on the role of foster son-in-law of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Ranjan Bhattacharya."

"I replied in a general way that there should not be any extra-constitutional centre and all decisions should be made by the Cabinet. This should by no means be interpreted that I implied that there is extra-constitutional centre in the present PMO," he said in a statement.

Referring to the PMO's competence, Sudarshan said, "I had said that the PMO should be managed by competent officers in a general way."

He appreciated the prime minister's decision to order a judicial probe into the allegations.
