Opposition parties, including the Samajwadi Party, the Communist Party of India, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Forward Bloc and the Janata Dal (Secular), on Thursday hurriedly cobbled up a national alliance in a bid to replace the Vajpayee government reeling under allegations of corruption in defence deals.
The new political entity will be called the Lok Morcha.
The front will be headed by CPI-M leader and former West Bengal chief minister, Jyoti Basu, and Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav will be its convenor.
Addressing a crowded press conference in New Delhi, Yadav told reporters that the Lok Morcha has been formed to provide the country an alternative to the ruling National Democratic Alliance.
"Those who are interested in the woes of the poor will be the bulwark of this front," he said.
Former West Bengal CM, Jyoti Basu, said the message should go to the people that the 'People's Front' has been formed and a mass movement will be launched soon to oust the Vajpayee government."
