'For the country, there is now reason to worry'

Lt Gen (retd) Satish Nambiar

The expose by tehelka.com on corruption in defence deals is quite shattering in many ways.

Actually, it is not surprising. One always knew that such things happen. But what is shocking is the scale at which it is now taking place.

The fact that it is so easy and that cash is taken. And that so many people are involved.

As an uniformed officer, I feel not just upset, but disgusted that serving officers are involved in the scandal.

It is really very sad.

For the country, there is now reason to worry. We have to sit up and take notice.

On one hand, you have so many young soldiers laying down their lives in wars and counter-insurgency operations.

And here we have some officers who are doing dangerous things that can put all our lives at risk.

Are the lives of our young fighting officers at risk? It is sad to think that their lives actually depend on such shameless officers.

And as far as politicians go, they are the same across parties. It is so disturbing.

One only hopes that some heads will now roll.

Lt Gen (retd) Satish Nambiar is former Director General, Military Operations and former deputy chief of army staff.

As told to Ramesh Menon
