AIADMK offer insufficient: Congress

Tarashankar Sahay in New Delhi

The Congress on Wednesday emphasised that the offer of 45 seats by AIADMK supremo J Jayalalitha to the Congress and Tamil Maanila Congress was insufficient.

"We consider the number insufficient," chief Congress spokesperson S Jaipal Reddy told reporters in New Delhi. He, however, added that negotiations were still on with the AIADMK as the Congress still had reservations against the PMK.

"There is a noted change in the approach by Jayalalitha and therefore we may rethink our approach towards the PMK," Reddy added.

On whether the Congress and TMC would fight elections in TN together, he said the two were ideologically and historically close to each other.

Referring to the Bharatiya Janata Party, Reddy said that it was the Congress's ideological rival at the national level quantitatively and qualitatively and it was a threat to the country's polity. "Our objective is to keep the National Democratic Alliance at bay," he added.

Commenting on West Bengal, he said, "The Congress did not have any problem with the Trinamul Congress. However, if the Trinamul allied with the BJP in the state, the Congress would have no direct or indirect alliance with the Trinamul."
