Brigadier Bikram Singh, the high-profile army spokesman during the Kargil conflict who was injured in a terrorist attack on Thursday in Anantnag, is out of danger, army officers said in New Delhi on Friday.
Brigadier Singh, whose convoy was attacked in the middle of the town, was operated upon on Thursday night at Srinagar, an army spokesman confirmed.
He said splinters were successfully removed from the body of the Rashtriya Rifles sector commander for Anantnag and he was "out of danger".
Later last evening, Brig Singh spoke to his wife, he said.
The brigadier's convoy was passing through Janglaat Mandi opposite the government hospital in Anantnag. It was returning from a visit to Khandroo village.
A man, suspected to be a member of the Lashkar-e-Tayiba, appeared from one of the narrow lanes in the area and started spraying bullets at the convoy from his AK-47 rifle.
Colonel J P Jaanu, commanding officer of the 120 Territorial Army battalion, and another soldier were killed on the spot.
The other soldiers retaliated. In the crossfire three civilians were also killed.
Brigadier Singh was a colonel in the Directorate of Military Operations when he became the official voice and face of the army in New Delhi during the daily media briefings on the Kargil conflict two years ago.
