In sporadic incidents of violence, at least two public transport buses were set on fire and the windscreens of scores of others were broken by stone-throwing by mobs in various parts of the state.

Some suburban trains were stopped and stoned by miscreants. Police patrolling has been intensified.

According to the police, two police jeeps and six buses were damaged in various places in the southern districts where police cane charged agitating DMK activists.

Reports of road blockades by DMK men also came in from different parts of the state.

Closure of shops and other business establishments in various parts also affected normal life.

In Madras, the windscreens of several buses were broken by mobs as the news of Karunanidhi's arrest spread to all corners of the state. Shop-keepers downed their shutters in some parts of the city.

An attempt by a group of miscreants to set ablaze a city booking counter was foiled by personnel of the state and railway police while unidentified persons pelted stones at a local train near Pallavaram station.

Long distance trains stopped for short periods by protestors included the Dadar Express, Sapthagiri Express and Arakkonam-Renigunta passenger, railway police sources said.
