Sun TV journalist secures bail

N Sathiya Moorthy in Madras

Sun TV reporter Suresh, whose arrest had sparked off a confrontation between journalists and the Tamil Nadu government, on Friday managed to secure bail as the government did not oppose it vehemently.

Suresh was arrested on the night of June 27 for accompanying former minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam legislator K Ponmudi during an 'inspection' of a state civil supplies godown in Villupuram.

K Ponmudi, who had been arrested on Tuesday on trespassing and other charges, secured conditional bail with restrictions have been placed on his movements. His bail was also not vehemently opposed by the government.

Earlier on Friday morning, journalists protesting Chief Minister J Jayalalitha's indifference to their efforts to hand over a memorandum on Suresh's arrest were taken into police custody and charged with defying prohibitory orders.

They were also released in the evening.
