Curfew reimposed in parts of Nepal

Our Correspondent in Kathmandu

Curfew was reimposed in the capital Kathmandu and neighbouring Lalitpur, following a second day of violence on Tuesday.

Local news reports quoted the police as saying that it was reimposed from 1200 hours, that is six hours after it was lifted at 0500 hours.

The curfew was imposed Monday after four people, including a policemen, were killed and more than 30 others were injured, after police clashed with demonstrators, who were demanding an inquiry into a massacre at the royal palace Friday night.

Unconfirmed reports said that the violence claimed six lives.

The curfew was lifted on Tuesday morning, until midday, to enable people to shop for provisions.

The 12-hour curfew was being reimposed to prevent any "unwanted disturbances", the home ministry announced on state radio.

Mobs had clashed with the army and police at many places across Kathamandu on Sunday, forcing security personnel to resort to firing and a cane charge to disperse them.

While one Nepali daily put the death toll since Sunday at six, another said at least two protestors died in police firing and cane charge. There was no official figure on the casualties.

King Gyanendra Monday had announced a probe, the findings of which he promised would be made public.
