Indian Cabinet discusses Nepal

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee Saturday held an emergency meeting in New Delhi with Union External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh and senior officials, to take stock of the situation in Nepal arising out of the killing of King Birendra, Queen Aishwarya and eleven other members of the royal family.

Others present at the meeting included Brajesh Mishra, principal secretary to the prime minister, and foreign secretary Chokila Iyer, official sources said.

Vajpayee also spoke to his Nepalese counterpart Girija Prasad Koirala following reports of the massacre.

The Cabinet Committee on Security had an emergency meeting to take stock of the situation. Jaswant Singh briefed members on the developments in the Himalayan kingdom.

New Delhi is closely watching the developments, sources said.

Singh is expected to come out with a statement after a formal announcement is made in Nepal about the king's assassination.
