All 3 accomplices of Pankaj arrested

Sharat Pradhan in Lucknow

Three persons wanted in the Phoolan Devi murder case were arrested by the Uttar Pradesh police in Saharanpur on Monday afternoon.

According to Uttar Pradesh's Principal Home Secretary Naresh Dayal, the second car used in the murder was also recovered from their possession, alongwith a mobile phone and two SIM cards.

Dayal told rediff.com, "The three youth were identified as Ravindra Singh, Shekhar Singh and and Rajbir."

While Ravindra, a resident of Khurja was said to be an employee of Sher Singh Rana, the self-proclaimed 'killer' of the bandit queen turned member of parliament, the other two were students of BSM Degree College in Roorkee.

"The initial interrogation of the three young men, seemed to corroborate Rana's claims that he alone has masterminded the murder," the principal home secretary said.

Referring to reports about the 'surrender' by these persons before a Saharanpur court, Dayal clarified, "Well, they did claim to have come to Saharanpur to surrender before the court there, but on getting a tip off, the local police nabbed them just outside the court premises."

The white Maruti Car (bearing a Ghaziabad Registration number UP 14 B 7559) they were using was also confiscated.

"This car had been used in the murder of Phoolan Devi in New Delhi on July 25," the official pointed out.

Declining to comment on the veracity of their confession before the Saharanpour police, Dayal said, "it was still not clear what motive these fellows had behind the murder conspiracy."

He hoped that the Delhi police, whom the arrested youth were handed over around 5 pm this evening, would be in a position to unravel the truth.

"Since the case was being handled by the Delhi police, they alone would be in a position to get more details," he added.
