No plan to replace Manipur governor: Swami

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

Minister of State for Home Affairs I D Swami on Monday categorically denied that there was any move to replace Manipur Governor Ved Marwah.

He was reacting to a news item that appeared in a national daily on Monday morning, which had quoted home ministry sources as saying that Marwah may be eased out.

"I do not know from where the concerned journalist picked up the information, but I can tell you that there is no such move. Governor Marwah has done a good job and there is no reason why he should be removed from office," Swami told rediff.com.

The report in the daily also said that Marwah was not too keen to continue and wanted the Centre to appoint a new person in his place immediately.

Sources in the governor's office in Imphal also contradicted the claims made in the story.

"The governor has not made any such request to the Centre. It is unfortunate that some mischievous elements are spoon-feeding the media to serve their vested interests," the source said.

But former Manipur chief minister Radbhabinod Koijam said that the people of the state were not happy with the way Marwah had handled the protests.

"I know for a fact that some people in the state were not happy with his handling of the situation," Koijam said.
