Centre decides to dissolve Manipur assembly

Our Correspondent in New Delhi

The Minister of State for Home Affairs, I D Swami, said on Monday the Centre will dissolve the Manipur assembly and hold fresh elections.

He was speaking to reporters outside the Parliament.

When asked why the step is being taken now and not earlier, Swami, quoting the Supreme Court ruling, said the Centre could not have dissolved the Manipur assembly till it got Lok Sabha's approval for the imposition of Article 356 in the state.

The Supreme Court had directed the government to keep the assembly in suspended animation till the Lok Sabha approved President's rule.

The government on Friday had clinched Rajya Sabha's approval for President's rule in Manipur with crucial support from the Congress party.

The dissolution of the assembly is expected to be approved by the Lok Sabha after the approval of President's rule in Manipur.

The Union Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani had said last week that the government would soon dissolve the state assembly but he had not indicated early elections.
