Phoolan murder causes mayhem in Lok Sabha

Angered by the assassination of their colleague Phoolan Devi, Samajwadi Party members on Friday created pandemonium in Lok Sabha, forcing adjournment of the House for three hours.

As soon as the House assembled for the day, agitated members stormed the well of the House, holding ruling Bharatiya Janata Party responsible for the murder of Phoolan Devi and demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Some also raised slogans seeking resignation of Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani.

Some BJP members wanted to move into the well to face the Samajwadi members but were prevented by their senior leaders.

Speaker G M C Balayogi repeatedly requested Samajwadi leader Mulayam Singh Yadav to control his members and direct them to take their seats for resumption of normal proceedings.

Instead of paying any heed to Balayogi's request, Yadav tried to defend his members.

Samajwadi Party members were also joined by Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Raghuvansh Prasad Singh and Republican Party of India leader Ramdas Athawale in the well.

No sooner was the House called to order, Samajwadi Party members rushed to the well of the House raising slogans blaming BJP for Phoolan Devi's assassination.

Sensing the mood of the members, Balayogi ordered the TV cameras to be switched off but this failed to have any effect and they continued to raise slogans saying it was 'politics of revenge'.

Repeated requests by Speaker asking the members to allow normal proceedings since there had been no business in the House for the last three days fell on deaf ears.

However, Samajwadi Party members remained unrelenting and charged that for the first time a member of the House had been murdered in broad daylight.

Leading the Samajwadi members was Akhilesh Singh who refused to heed the Speaker's request that they could raise the matter after Question Hour.

"What is your intention. You don't want discussion. You only want to stall proceedings," said the Speaker but it had no effect on the members and they continued raising slogans forcing him to adjourn the House till 1400 hours.
