Centre decides to limit Naga truce to Nagaland

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

The Centre has decided to delete three crucial words -- "without territorial limits" -- from its ceasefire agreement of June 14 with the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (Isak-Muivah).

Announcing this in New Delhi on Friday, Union Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani said, "After discussing the issue of the Naga ceasefire with the chief ministers of the northeastern states, the prime minister has announced that three words, 'without territorial limits', will be deleted from the June 14 agreement and the status quo ante before June 14 restored."

Advani said the government's representative, former home secretary K Padmanabhaiah, had already discussed this change with NSCN-IM leaders and they had agreed to it in view of the strong sentiments against it in the other northeastern states.

Advani refused to take any questions after reading out his statement.

The prime minister's meeting was attended by Manipur Governor Ved Marwah and chief ministers Mukut Mithi (Arunachal Pradesh), Tarun Gogoi (Assam), Zoramthanga (Mizoram), E K Mawlong (Meghalaya), Manik Sarkar (Tripura) and S C Jamir (Nagaland). Home Minister Advani, Minister of State for Home I D Swami and National Security Adviser Brajesh Mishra were also present.

Speaking to reporters before the meeting, Jamir had stated that he would love to have peace not only in Nagaland but in the entire Northeast.
