Phoolan's killers met her in the morning: Home ministry official

Deepshikha Ghosh in New Delhi

The three masked killers of Phoolan Devi are believed to have met her earlier in the day, a home ministry official said on Thursday.

The official said the killers, who were hooded when they shot the MP outside her official residence on Wednesday, spoke to her pretending to be members of the Samajwadi Party.

"They talked to her in the drawing room of her Ashoka Road residence," the official said. He said the Delhi police is trying to ascertain whether Phoolan Devi knew them.

The official said the assassins most probably escaped from the city by train. They escaped from the spot in a car, abandoned it about 3 km away, and later boarded an auto-rickshaw.

Delhi Police Commissioner Ajay Raj Singh reported these preliminary findings to Union Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani hours after the sensational murder. The police chief then left for Mirzapur, Phoolan Devi's constituency in Uttar Pradesh.
