Guards abscond with Rs 20 million
in bank money

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

In a sensational incident, two persons working with a private security agency decamped with Rs two crore (Rs 20 million) after hijacking a van used to transfer cash from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to the ICICI Bank branch in New Delhi.

The incident took place on Monday afternoon. However, despite knowing their identities and their residencial addresses, the Delhi police is yet to catch the culprits.

ICICI Bank employed the services of a private security agency called Brinks Arya Company to guard its premises and to protect the van used to transport money from one bank to another.

According to the Delhi police, some employees of the security agency encashed a cheque of Rs two crore from the RBI branch on Parliament Street.

The money was being transported to the ICICI Bank at Connaught Place when two of the employees - driver Dharamvir Singh (27) and gunman Jaswant Singh (26) - overpowered their five colleagues and tied them up in the van.

They then drove the van towards Brijvasan. On the way, they transferred the money to another vehicle, which had been accompanying the van right from the time of the hijacking, and sped away.

The five others somehow managed to untie themselves, broke open the lock of the van and called the police.

The Delhi police had sent police parties to Rai village in Sonepat district of Haryana, from where the culprits hailed.

Senior police officers, including Joint Commissioner of south Delhi Amod Kanth who is now supervising the case, refused to talk about it.

The police suspect that some more employees of the security agency might be involved in the incident.
