Jaya terms Centre's warning 'illegal'

Taking a tough stand against the Centre's action of issuing a warning to the state on the events that took place in Tamil Nadu after the arrests of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam President M Karunanidhi and two Union ministers, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Saturday night termed the warning as 'illegal'.

"There is no law in the country for the Centre to issue warnings to states," she said after the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's executive meeting.

However, the state had given an explanation to the Centre as directed in the warning only to maintain cordial Centre-State relations, she said

She added that the warning wanted the state to take action against 'erring police officials'.

The state had informed the Centre about the constitution of the Justice A Raman Enquiry Commission to probe the alleged police excesses, Jayalalithaa said.

She said there was no question of taking action against the officials till the commission submitted its report.

Jayalalithaa said that dropping of charges against the two Union ministers Murasoli Maran and T R Baalu did not mean that they were 'not guilty'.
