Centre not taking speedy action on arrests: Karunanidhi

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam President M Karunanidhi on Wednesday said he felt that the Centre was not taking speedy action against the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government in Tamil Nadu for arresting him and two Union ministers.

Flatly denying any role in the Rs 1.2 million 'Flyover Scam', Karunanidhi said neither the investigating officer probing the case nor the Madras corporation commissioner had provided any proof in the court to show his involvement in the scam.

The investigating officers had told the court that only contractors might have got some benefits.

Asked for his comments on Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's statement that he was arrested late in the night to avoid a law and order problem, he said the DMK government had ordered her arrest during day.

"Was there any law and problem then?" he asked.

Karunanidhi also said that Jayalalithaa's statement defending his arrest was an indication to the Raman commission that her government wanted a report from it exonerating the police of charges of excesses.

Demanding to know why the case was not referred to the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption he said that everything, including the filing of the case and his arrest, was done in 'great haste'.

Denying that the police had behaved in a decent manner with him, as claimed by Jayalalithaa, he said only those who have experienced police brutality could have understood the extent of 'police excesses' during his arrest.

Karunanidhi said he could see the footage of SUN TV and the police video only after being released from prison on July 4. Both clippings had clearly exposed the police excesses on him, he alleged.

Meanwhile, the SUN TV on Wednesday refuted Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's statement on telecast of the clippings of Karunanidhi's arrest and said they expected the government to stop spreading 'canards about a professionally managed organisation'.

Referring to the clippings shown by SUN TV News Editor V Raja said its crew had reached the spot after the arrival of the police and its video team and commenced shooting only in the mid-course of the scuffle.

Raja said SUN TV was willing to give the tapes to any internationally recognised expert for scrutiny.

"We hope the police will also do the same with their tapes," he added.
