One killed as women protesters
take to streets in Manipur

A woman was killed and an unspecified number of people were injured after being hit by teargas shells fired by police in Imphal, as hundreds of thousand women took out torchlight processions defying curfew in the Valley districts and laid siege to the state capital in the largest-ever demonstration against extension of the Naga ceasefire to Manipur.

A 55-year-old woman Haisram Tamphasana Devi was killed and many others were injured at Kwakeithel Moirangpurel Leikai area in Imphal when the police resorted to large-scale use of tear-gas, official sources said.

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and police also fired in the air to disperse women protesters in Imphal town where the army and paramilitary forces had put up barricades at several entry points and were guarding the Raj Bhavan and key government buildings, official sources said.

Police fired teargas shells at Wangkhei, Kwakeithel, Lamlong, Sagolband, Singajamei, Uripok, Chingmeirong, Keisampat, Naoremthong, Thangmeiband to prevent the women, shouting anti-ceasefire slogans, from entering Imphal town, the sources said.

Women with flaming torches took to the streets in Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, Bishnupur districts, besides parts of the hill district of Chandel and the border town of Moreh, they said.
