AIADMK delegation calls on President

All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Members of Parliament on Monday called on President K R Narayanan and presented a memorandum explaining their side of the events relating to the arrest of former Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi.

The MPs subsequently denied reports of any compromise deal on the release of two Union Minister Murasoli Maran and T R Baalu.

"There is no compromise (on the release of the two Union Ministers). The police have taken certain measures. The investigation is already over and they felt further remand is not necessary," Tamil Nadu Education Minister M Thambi Durai said after leading the 14-member delegation.

Stating that whatever happened in the state in the wake of the arrest of Karunanidhi was explained to the President, he said the delegation did not discuss anything other than that.

To a question how the state government would react if the Centre issued any directive, Durai said it was a hypothetical question. Stating that in every state police make preventive arrests, he said everything was normal in Tamil Nadu and Monday's bandh was a 'flop'.

"The DMK is only trying to malign the AIADMK government and they cannot succeed," he added. He said that people knew how DMK had treated the AIADMK when they were in power in the state.

The delegation earlier met Union Law Minister Arun Jaitley and presented a copy of the video cassette of the incident taken by the state police.
