Quake damages historic monuments in Rajasthan

Kamla Bora in Jaipur

A high-intensity earthquake hit many regions in Rajasthan, including the capital city of Jaipur on Friday morning, forcing people to flee their homes.

In the desert towns of Jaisalmer, many historic monuments were reported to have been damaged in the quake.

The tremors damaged the historic Salam Singh Ki Haveli and Hawa Pol (Gate of Wind) in the world famous structure known as the golden fort after film maestro Satyajit Ray described it as 'Sonar Killa' in his novel.

The back portion of Salam Singh Ki Haveli was wrenched off and fell on the roof of the neighbouring house. Two slabs from the roof of Hawa Pol fell on the ground due to the impact of the earthquake.

Reports of the quake have been pouring in from many other parts of the state as well, including Jodhpur, Udaipur, Ajmer and Jaisalmer, but there has been no report of any casualty.

The seismological department in Ajmer, the only one in Rajasthan equipped to record the intensity of earthquakes, told rediff.com on phone that the tremors started at 08.47.48 hours and continued for about 30 seconds.
