Sonia to visit Kumbh on Monday

Sharat Pradhan in Kumbh Nagari, Allahabad

Congress president Sonia Gandhi, leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, will visit the Maha Kumbh Mela on January 22.

Gandhi will attend a religious function at the camp of Satpal Maharaj, minister of state for railways in P V Narasimha Rao's erstwhile government and head of a large religious congregation that comprises many sadhus.

She will also offer prayers to the Ganga at the Triveni Sangam.

An advance team of the Special Protection Group has already arrived in Allahabad to prepare the ground for Gandhi's visit.

The Uttar Pradesh government, however, does not seem to be too pleased with Gandhi's plan to visit the world's largest gathering. Mela Officer Jivesh Nandan told rediff.com that the district administration was yet to give its confirmation for the Congress politician's visit.

Nandan said the SPG was in touch with the district administration and a final decision would be taken on Sunday. But other sources revealed that the delay was because a communication had been sent to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Rajnath Singh and his word on the matter was awaited.
