BJP distances itself from VHP's deadline

The Bharatiya Janata Party Saturday sought to distance itself from the Vishwa Hindu Parishad's deadline for the construction of a Ram temple at Ayodhya and said it had nothing to do with it.

"We have nothing to do with the VHP's decision to set a deadline for temple construction at Ayodhya," senior BJP leader J P Mathur told reporters in New Delhi.

He said the BJP's stand on the temple issue had been that it could be resolved either through a court order or through mutual consent of the two communities.

On the proposed visit of Congress president Sonia Gandhi to Kumbh Mela, he said: "She is free to go there and take a dip. But, Congressmen are pushing her to take such a step for their own political gains."
