Qureshi remanded to police
custody till Jan 18

Hashim Qureshi, the ex-hijacker who was flown in on Friday under tight security, was remanded to police custody till next Thursday by the duty magistrate on Friday evening.

The police said Hashim was taken to the residence of duty magistrate Mohammad Ibrahim at Bemina, under tight security. The police could not produce him before the chief judicial magistrate, as per a Delhi court order, due to court holidays in Srinagar.

The Delhi court had directed the state police to produce Hashim before the CJM Srinagar on or before January 14.

"We will produce him again before the duty magistrate on January 18, as per his direction," said Kashmir Deputy Inspector General K Rajendra.

Earlier, only a few relatives of Hashim waited for two hours, along with a Delhi lawyer, at the CJM court. Photo-journalists were not allowed to enter the court premises. Outside, paramilitary personnel and the state policemen were deployed.

After the police remand, Hashim was taken to the joint interrogation centre at Hariniwas.

Earlier in the afternoon, the state police brought Hashim from New Delhi, and he was taken to the Sadar police station in Srinagar by the district police chief himself.

A case of hijacking has been filed against Hashim at the police station.
