Ganga given the go by as saints prefer bottled water

Even the saints seems to have lost trust in the fabled pristine purity of the Ganga. After the ritual bath and other rituals at the Sangam, they were seen drinking bottled mineral water.

EMPEROR IN RAGS: Emperor Harshvardhan was reputed to be a great philanthropist who used to periodically distribute all his wealth among his subjects. A life-size statue of King Harshavardhan seems to recall one such time when the coffers were emptied. The statue, wrapped in rags, waits to be unveiled at the main entrance of Kumbh Nagar.

WHEN PUSH CAME TO SHOVE: Police personnel, reportedly given special training to behave politely with the pilgrims, were seen losing their cool and adopting heavy handed methods when the push came to shove as the crowds milled around the mela area.

SAND TRAP: A large number of vehicles loaded with essential commodities were trapped in the sandy bed of the Ganga. These are likely to remain firmly embedded there as the heavy cranes are unable to approach lest they too suffer a similar fate.

BLACK MARKET IN MUD AND DUNG: Some enterprising individuals were seen to be making a quick buck through sale of mud and cow dung, in great demand by the Kalpvasis. Both the commodities are being sold at exhorbitant rates in the mela area.

DIVINE CURE: The government has opened many clinics in the mela area but sans doctors or medicines leaving the pilgrims hoping for a divine cure for their ailments.
