15-day Holi ceasefire in Manipur: PTI

General Officer Commanding 57 Mountain Division Major General Iqbal Singh told newspersons in Imphal on Monday that security forces would not carry out any operation against insurgents in the state during the period and asked the insurgent outfits to respect this 'peace opportunity'.

Singh said insurgents should also avoid any violence during the Holi festival and asked the militants not to move around with arms, ammunition and explosives during the festival.

''They (insurgents) should take this opportunity to enjoy the festival season with their kith and kin,'' Singh said, adding that the security forces would respond in an appropriate military manner if they were attacked.

The GOC said the army's sole aim in Manipur was to promote peace and to contribute towards prosperity and development in the state.

Stating that this was a joint responsibility, he said the people, media and all institutions of democracy should assert their will and work together.

Once such will and resolve was displayed, insurgency could not remain, Singh said, adding that the army would help re-establish rule of law and bring peace and prosperity to the people of Manipur.
