Former Union home minister Indrajit Gupta dead

Veteran Communist Party of India leader and former Union home minister Indrajit Gupta died of cancer at his residence in Calcutta early Tuesday morning.

He was 81 and is survived by his wife.

Gupta was brought here on January 17 from New Delhi, where he was being treated at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

He was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Kolkata South constituency for the first time in 1960. He won 11 times from different constituencies and represented Midnapore in the current Lok Sabha.

Gupta remained the general secretary of the CPI for a long time.

A trade unionist, he was also a former general secretary of the party's trade union wing -- the All India Trade Union Congress

A pall of gloom descended on the CPI headquarters at Ajay Bhawan in New Delhi.

While CPI general secretary A B Bardhan left for Calcutta by a morning flight, other party leaders and MPs are to leave Tuesday afternoon, party sources said.

The date and the timing of the departed leader's funeral will be decided by the West Bengal state secretariat, which is meeting in Calcutta at 1100 hours on Tuesday.
