Senior Manipur official gunned down by terrorists

Terrorists gunned down an Additional Deputy Commissioner in Manipur's border town of Moreh, official sources said on Monday.

Moirangthem Chaoba Singh, ADC of Chandel district, who was also in-charge of Moreh sub-division, was shot at from point blank range by two gunmen when he slowed down his vehicle at Moreh bazaar, about 120 kms south-east of Imphal, on Sunday evening, the sources said.

Chaoba Singh had gone out in his car along with his driver after receiving a telephone call at his residence, the sources said.

As his vehicle slowed down in the crowded bazaar, two unidentified gunmen walked up to his vehicle and pumped two bullets in his head, the sources said.

Singh was immediately taken to the Community Health Centre where he succumbed to injuries.

His body was taken to the Regional Institute of Medical Science and hospital for post-mortem, the sources said.

The identity of the killers was not known. A combing operation has been launched in the area.

Security measures in the sensitive border town have been beefed up to prevent militants from crossing over to nearby Myanmar.
