UNICEF to vaccinate
quake-hit kids: PTI

A major campaign has been launched in earthquake-hit Gujarat to vaccinate 400,000 children under five against measles, the United Nations Children's Fund has said.

In the first phase of the campaign, 400,000 children will be vaccinated and another several thousand would be vaccinated in the second phase, which is to start in 10 days, UNICEF said.

The health workers are also providing a doze of vitamin A to each child to boost the immune system and help protect against diseases.

UNICEF said 80 teams of health workers have fanned out affected areas and reached more than 14,000 children in the first two days of the campaign.

According to the agency, the highest risk of measles in Gujarat would surface in two months and the campaign has now been launched to forestall any further outbreak.

UNICEF supplies vaccines and syringes for the campaign in which the World Health Organisation and local and international non-governmental organisations are involved.

UNICEF said fewer than one hundred children have lost both parents and they are being cared by the members of their extended families. But despite strong family bonds, close monitoring would be required to ensure that families are able to sustain proper care in the long term, it said.
