Kutch experiences more aftershocks

At least nine aftershocks shook the earthquake-ravaged Kutch region of Gujarat since Sunday night with the most powerful one touching 4.0 on the Richter Scale, the Indian Meteorology Department in New Delhi said on Monday.

The aftershocks, ranging in magnitude between 3.1 and 4.0 on the Richter Scale, were felt in the area since Sunday night, with the biggest one striking at 0510 IST. The last tremor was recorded at 2100 IST and its magnitude was also 4.0 on the Richter Scale.

With these, the total number of aftershocks measuring more than 3 on the Richter Scale since the devastating Republic Day earthquake has gone up to 286.

Kutch has been convulsed by an increased frequency of aftershocks since Thursday night, after being jolted by a 5.3 magnitude earthquake, in which at least 40 people were injured as they scampered out of their homes in panic in Ahmedabad and other places.
