After-shocks rattle Kutch

A series of aftershocks jolted the Kutch area of quake-hit Gujarat on Thursday night and Friday morning, sending a fresh wave of panic among the people.

Following the moderate intensity tremor measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale at 2225 hours on Thursday night, which forced people to rush out of their houses in the middle of the night in Ahmedabad and other places, the area was convulsed by ten more aftershocks, the Indian Meteorological Department said in Delhi on Friday.

The magnitude of these tremors ranged between 3.0 and 4.0 on the Richter scale.

The IMD said that the aftershocks it recorded since Thursday night measured 5.3 at 2225 hrs, 4.0 at 2235 hrs, 3.1 at 2240 hrs, 3.4 at 2307 hrs, 3.5 at 2340, 3.9 at 0006, 3.0 at 0025 hrs, 3.3 at 0052 hrs, 3.0 at 0129 hrs and 0148 hrs and 3.2 at 0415 hrs.

In all, 234 aftershocks measuring over 3.0 on the Richter scale have been recorded in the Kutch area since the devastating 6.9 quake of January 26.
