Srinagar police control room attacked

One policeman was killed and eight others, including Superintendent of Police (South) Ramesh Jhala, were injured when a group of militants attacked the police control room at Batmaloo in Srinagar with hand-grenades and assault rifles on Friday evening.

The heavily guarded complex came under intense firing from militants and the three personnel guarding the main gate were seriously injured, police sources said. They were rushed to the police hospital.

The guards manning the bunkers around the control room returned the fire even as paramilitary reinforcements from adjoining areas rushed to the spot.

"Intense firing is still continuing and we don't know what is happening. I can only hear sounds of gunfire," a police officer told rediff.com

Army and paramilitary forces have moved in and laid a cordon around the PCR complex where intermittent firing was continuing at the time this copy was uploaded (2030 IST).
