Two more rescued in Bhuj

In an incredible operation, security forces Monday rescued an elderly man and a woman in worst-hit Bhuj, 11 days after the devastating quake struck Gujarat.

Using metal cutters and bare hands, a Border Security Force rescue team dug through the rubble of flattened buildings at Karsana market.

"Everyone had given up hope of finding any survivors. This is a miracle," a senior BSF official, supervising the rescue and relief operations, said adding the BSF rescuers had heard faint sounds from beneath the debris, leading to a last-ditch rescue operation.

He said the man and the woman had been admitted to a make-shift hospital. They have possibly been discharged and handed over to their relatives, he added.

Meanwhile, in Ahmedabad, a 22-year-old housewife, along with her son, committed suicide after watching scenes of the earthquake on television, police said Monday.

Traumatised by witnessing the tragedy's horrendous scenes on TV, Krishnaben Patel set herself and her three-year old son Mihir ablaze by pouring kerosene on February 2, an official release said.

"Krishnaben feared for their future and took the extreme step under severe stress," police said.

The mother-son duo were later admitted in Shardaben Hospital with Mihir succumbing to injuries the same day while Krishnaben died on February 3, it added.
