POTO is unnecessary: Karunanidhi

N Sathiya Moorthy in Madras

A day after the Cabinet made amendments to the Prevention of Terrorism Ordinance, a key ally of the National Democratic Alliance, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, said that the new anti-terror ordinance was unnecessary

"The DMK still feels that POTO is not necessary," party president and former Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi said on Friday.

"This government at the Centre will not misuse it. But the possibility of successor-governments doing so must be taken into consideration," he said.

The DMK president also reiterated his party's stand on the Ayodhya issue.

"The DMK was, and is, for reconstructing the Babri mosque at the disputed site. This has been accepted by the NDA as well," he said.

"We will see if the Bharatiya Janata Party really does so," he said, referring to Vishwa Hindu Parishad president Ashok Singhal's statement that the BJP must include the Ayodhya issue in its agenda for the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections next year.

Karunanidhi also saw no political significance in Singhal's meeting with All India Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam chief and former Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa at her Poes Garden residence on Thursday.

"I don't want to comment on it," he said, when asked about Singhal's comment that Jayalalithaa was close to the VHP.
