Elections to the Manipur Legislative Assembly will be held along with the polls in Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal and Punjab early next year, Election Commission sources said on Thursday.
A decision to this effect was taken at a full meeting of the commission presided over by Chief Election Commissioner J M Lyngdoh on Wednesday, the sources said.
The government had recently expressed its desire to hold assembly elections in Manipur, which was brought under central rule on June 2, 2001, after intense political instability.
The sources, however, declined to go into the possible poll dates.
While the term of the Uttar Pradesh assembly comes to an end on April 20, 2002, the term of the Punjab assembly expires on March 2. Parliament on November 27 approved the extension of President's rule in Manipur for another six months from December 2, 2001.
